Marshal and Jade had their first lesson in music at school last week. A revelation for Jade and a drama for Marshal. Jade was chosen to play a class instrument and Marshal despite putting his hand as high as the moon was NOT chosen. After an hour of 5 year olds compiling the most amazing “racket” Jade emerged very proud and happy with her first formal induction to music. Marshal “HATED” it.
Given the paternal music history, I decided to make amends. Luckily, the Fremantle Symphony Orchestra were holding “cushion concerts” this weekend. A cushion concert is where kids are welcome to lie on a cushion during a 1.5 hour demonstration of music and instruments. They are allowed to walk around and touch the instruments as well as interact with the orchestra WHILST they play! Distracting for the musicians but an amazing experience for the kids to be up close to the sound and movement of artists.
Sunday noon in an air conditioned concert hall with 39 degrees outside was bliss and I am glad to say the outcome was positive. “Mummy, I was so happy that I knew the music from the Nutcracker ballet. It was one of the marches and I remember it. (Jade and I went to the ballet a few months ago) I SOOO want to play the flute or violin when I grow up. It sounds so beautiful”. (Jade). “ This is much better than at school, why do I have to do music and school when it’s boring and this is NOT. I am going to play the drums like Niklas and the piano like Loiiiiic when I grow up not poo poo violin!” (yes Marshal).
Ice cream in Freo and swim on the way home completed a lovely hot Sunday after a Saturday of beach and Harriet’s 5th birthday party!
Obviously, Jade & Marshal are now qualified musicians. Both wanted to try the flute when we got home and Marshal took the program to school today and spoke to the class about the “cushion concert”.
